Angry Bucks Voters Confront Patrick Murphy in Middletown Township
May 22, 2010

(Middletown Twp, Pa) --- Dozens of angry 8th district voters confronted incumbent Patrick Murphy today, after the Democrat congressman again refused to hold an open townhall meeting.

About 100 people from around Bucks County and MontCo arrived at the Middletown Township municipal building around 9:30am in hopes of getting answers as to why Murphy voted to approve one of the most unpopular and expensive health care bills in history, without ever holding an open public meeting to answer important questions.

"Stop hiding and hold a townhall now," several yelled, as the crowd chanted and Murphy stammered to explain why he wouldn't comply.

Murphy told the crowd he would only meet with people one-on-one, and that he had set aside about 90 minutes to meet only with those who filled out a request form. But many pointed out that Murphy would never be able to meet with everyone in the audience within 90 minutes.

Many said they could not wait around all day, especially on a Saturday normally filled with little league, yardsales, and shopping. Murphy implied that since many in the audience opposed him politically, their questions were somehow less valid or .

The crowd eventually calmed down when Republican congressional candidate Mike Fitzpatrick arrived at the municipal building, and asked Murphy to hold an open townhall setting.

Fitzpatrick confronted Murphy face to face for about 10 minutes, as people in the building continued to shout questions at Murphy.

Fitzpatrick challenged Murphy to hold regular monthly or weekly debates from now until November, but Murphy seemed unsure as to whether he would agree.

Murphy on Tuesday issued a press release saying he was open to "eight debates" beginning this fall, probably around September.

Former 8th district congressional candidates James Jones and Ira Hoffman, both Republicans, also attended the event. Both Jones and Hoffman sided with Fitzpatrick in demanding an open townhall meeting.
