Gregory W. Marra believes it important for people in 2009 to have a visual connection to our early American patriots: the ones who fought for our independance and helped write the Constitution.
The best place to start, he says, is at historic Washington Crossing Park where Marra is on a mission to create, and eventually display, a bronze statue of Gen. George Washington.
"We really need a something at the park that people can see, and touch," Marra said minutes after a speech about freedom at the Bucks County Tea Party on Apr. 18.
The tea party, which was attended by about 1500 people, was held at the exact field where Washington gathered his troops in 1776 before leading them across the Delaware River to defeat the Hessians and British at Trenton, NJ.
"There's nothing (at the visitors center) now that commemorates Washington or gives a sense of history. We need something that lets people see what Washington .... the man .. looked like," he said.
As a noted sculptor, Marra offered to design and create the Washington statue, and is working on getting enough funding, which he estimates to be around $150,000 total.
Bronze is the most fitting material for a hero like Washingon, said Marra. It would take about six months to complete once funding is in place.
The state-run park is said to be considering Marra's idea, but is having financial problems of its own.
